With two months still pending in the official horticultural year, Calfornia almond shipments have created a new record in 2021. This is a Herculean feat because of the trade issues and Covid 19 complications that plagued the global markets throughout this year. According to reports, the California industry has exported over 219 million pounds of almond shipments in May. This brings the total for this crop year to a whopping 2.45 billion pounds. This is a commendable achievement in just 10 months. Hari Yellina, of Orchard Tech, has opined that this almond shipment record is an indicator of the popularity and demand for California Almonds. Because almonds are a sustainable plant protein, they are easily enjoyed all over the world.
Due to the demand for almonds, Calfornia exports its goods to over 100 countries across the world. In fact, the export growth has increased by over 30% in the last year. Moreover, a huge number of shipments were carried out in many markets. India is a major part of this record-breaking success. In an astonishing move, this market exceeded 300 million pounds of imports in one crop year. The current May report shows that India has now received 322 million pounds of almond shipments and is up 54% over the previous year to date.
Interestingly, the entire Asia-Pacific region has increased demand by over 46 per cent. All European consumers, along with the Middle Eastern and North African markets, continued to vouch for their need for almond shipments. The increase in the United States has been welcomed considering that the domestic market is large and well established. The year-to-year increase stands at 4% for the crop year. Almonds have established their demand over all others in new product introductions. This ranges from dairy alternatives and snacks to confectionery, bakery and bars.
