Australia Lifts Anti-Dumping Measures on Pineapples

According to the latest reports, Australia has finally announced that it will lift its anti-dumping measure on Philippine canned pineapples. This is the first time after 15 years that this decision has been made. This is one of the best news for the Philippines, which is now free to ship its canned pineapples duty-free to Australia. However, they still need to wait for the measures to end on October 17th, and on November 13, respectively.

The Agricultural secretary has welcomed this unique decision with open arms. He opined that the lifting of this anti-dumping measure will definitely improve the relationship between these two nations. He also stated that even though the trading relations between the nations have been a peaceful one, the anti-dumping measure was the only blockage between the two. Hence, this proves to be an extremely fruitful opportunity for the pineapple sector.

Pineapple is the next fruit, following banana, that could capture a big slice of the export market given the country’s comparative advantage in producing the said commodity. The Australian government first imposed the anti-dumping measure in 2006 for a period of five years after Golden Circle Limited, the sole producer of canned pineapples in Australia, lodged an application with its government requesting for the imposition of the said measure on canned pineapples imported from the Philippines.

The measure was extended for another five years in 2011, and subsequently for another five years in 2016. In its two reports issued on Oct. 6, 2021, Australia’s Anti-Dumping Commission (ADC) decided to discontinue the said measure on canned pineapples from the Philippines, following findings that its expiration will neither lead to the dumping of the products concerned nor cause material injury to the domestic industry.
