Mangosteen: The ‘Queen’ of Australian Tropical Fruit

One popular evergreen tree, found in Australia, is mangosteen. Originally found in South-East Asia and the Malaysian peninsula, this fruit has become a favourite in the nation. Mangosteen was first brought into the nation in the 1940s. In fact, the initial efforts to grow this plant was extremely unsuccessful. The first success was measured in the 70s in Northern Queensland.

In the present times, most of the mangosteen fruit is produced in Darwin and Northern Queensland. Moreover, there are majorly two types of this fruit that have been identified. They are categorized as oblong and spherical. Additionally, in this nation, some of the other types that are seen are yellow, Cambogia and Madrano. These vegetables are grown along with the traditional purple fruit that is widely available in the market.

The peak season in Australia is between November and March. Fruit mostly grows outside the edge of the tree’s canopy and is ready for harvest once they have turned from green to purple. A mature tree produces between 400-900 pieces of fruit, which have a bright green stem when they’re ready for harvest.
