Blueberries and their Growth in Australia (2020)

Introduction

Blueberries were first introduced and commercially grown in Victoria, Australia. The plantings commenced ten years later near New South Wales. It was then discovered that three major farms were producing 75% of the total blueberries present in the country. In the present times, there is a great increase in the production, growth and packaging of this fruit. The growth is majorly occurring in southern Australia and Tasmania. Additionally, there is an intense interest in organic produce among the customers. This is why a great number of producers are now certified as organic or bio-dynamic.

Statistics of Blueberries

Due to the immense popularity of this fruit, blueberries are enjoyed all over the country. Nevertheless, the growth of this fruit mostly occurs in the New South Wales region of Coffs Harbour. Due to its nature, this fruit is produced over the summer months. Nonetheless, the demand allows this fruit to be available all year-round.

As of June 2020:

• The supply per capita was 784 grams, based on the volume that was supplied.
• Approximately 20,783 tonnes of blueberries was produced and evaluated at $389.6 million,
• 56% of Australian households bought this fruit. This amounts to an average of 136 grams per shopping trip.
• The wholesale value of the fresh value amounted to $497.4 million.

Major Blueberries Production Areas

Presently, Coffs Harbour is identified as the dominant region where this fruit is produced. Nevertheless, it is also grown in other states of Australia due to its popularity.

International Trade

Traditionally, Australia has been an importer of fresh blueberries. It imports 1,000 to 1,700 tonnes per year. In fact, the majority of this fruit arrives from New Zealand. If the statistics of 2020 are considered, Australia successfully imported 1,644 tonnes of this fruit. Also, 60% of this fruit was sent to Hong Kong as part of this year’s international exports.
